Candidate for West Suffolk

Donald Allwright

Green Party General Election Candidate

Donald moved from near Cambridge to Haverhill in 2015, having joined the Green Party in the same year. He has taken a keen interest in sustainability and social justice since he was a teenager. With a career in Engineering and Telecommunications, he has a particular interest in sustainable transport and housing standards, having been involved in the early stages with a co-housing community in Cambridge building new residential properties to the Passivhaus standard, which results in extremely low energy consumption. One thing that particularly concerns him in West Suffolk is the poor nature of public transport infrastructure, not just between the major settlements in the constituency but also to neighbouring centres where many residents work, such as Cambridge and Bury St Edmunds. If we are to reduce our net CO2 emissions to net zero by 2030 we will need to address both these issues. As with many communities, there is pressure to provide new housing in the constituency and he sees it as a priority that all new developments meet the highest 'best practice' standards, which are already widely used elsewhere - not only in terms of construction but in the provision of suitable cycling, walking and public transport routes to essential local facilities such as schools, doctors' surgeries and retail outlets.

In his free time he is a keen cyclist and hill walker, and also particularly enjoys a variety of live music events.
