Candidate for Sutton and Cheam

Claire Jackson-Prior

Green Party General Election Candidate

I have lived in Sutton since 2002 and my two children both attend a local school. I work full-time as an administrator in Leatherhead.

I am passionate about the NHS. I understand the importance of having an acute hospital nearby so I oppose proposals from the local NHS to replace the 2 acute facilities we currently have at Epsom and St Helier Hospitals with a single acute unit. I believe the NHS should be publicly funded and provided by people who are directly employed by the NHS.

I believe education is of benefit to the whole country. A good education gives everyone the power to help themselves and others; it is not just a means to get a job. I believe that SATS test should be stopped and that teacher assessment is a much more appropriate way of measuring pupils’ progress.

The economic system we have favours those who are wealthy at the cost of the rest. People do not have enough money and are in debt because of cuts that have been justified by the false notion that we cannot afford public services. I am one of the founders of The Gower Initiative for Modern Money Studies whose primary objective is to promote a better public understanding of economics to help deliver social and environmental justice.

I understand that government action is desperately needed to tackle climate change. I support The Green New Deal to transition our society towards sustainability whilst decreasing inequality and providing the services we need.
