Candidate for Bromley and Chislehurst
I’m Mary Ion, Bromley resident for 27 years and NHS trauma therapist.
I stood as an election candidate for the Green Party in both the 2014 and 2018 local elections.
The most recent budget had no focus on the urgent task of tackling climate change but a rather “business as usual” focus on a reliance on motor transport and lack of investment in renewable energy.
In Bromley the over reliance on cars will see air pollution become an increasing risk and this must be seen as an urgent public health matter. A number of areas in Bromley Borough have illegal levels of pollution. We need to radically redesign our neighbourhoods in order to offer people the right to breathe clean air.
Regarding Brexit, in line with Green Policy I believe that the most democratic way forward is to have a peoples’ vote on the final deal now that it is clear that the Brexit promised is not deliverable and poses a number of risks to the UK.
I believe in the right of citizens to reject an assault on their quality of life in the name of austerity. Poverty is a real issue in Bromley where we are seeing increasing use of food banks and reliance on charity to meet basic needs.
I would see it as a great honour to serve in Bromley and Chislehurst to represent the positive message of the Green Party to promote justice for all people and the planet.
