Candidate for Bromley and Chislehurst

Mary Ion

Green Party General Election Candidate

I’m Mary Ion, Bromley resident for 30 years and NHS trauma nurse and psychotherapist.
This election has been brought about by the impossible challenge of delivering the Brexit promised by the Leave campaign. The Green Party supports a People’s Vote on the deal. However, the public are only too aware that this is not the greatest challenge that we face as we consider the warning of the Committee on Climate Change that the next 18 months will be critical to averting climate catastrophe. As a Green Party MP I would advocate for a just society in which people have a basic right to a secure, affordable home and a humane welfare state. Every resident should have access to quality health and education services.Transport policy needs to prioritise walking, cycling and public transport in order to improve air quality and reduce carbon emissions. Despite declaring a climate emergency the government has failed to take action and continues to support reckless policies such an airport expansion and extensive road building. We need to tackle the climate emergency now whilst improving quality of life for residents who are becoming increasingly aware of the way in which air pollution, flooding and loss of biodiversity are likely to impact on them now and in the future. I believe that the most effective way to protect worker’s rights and environmental protections, to deal with the climate emergency whilst creating a fairer society is within the EU in collaboration with our international partners.
